Apoorva Ramaswamy gave a more bare-teethed defense of her husband after the Republican presidential primary debate on Wednesday after taking a less-brazen approach at previous public appearances.
Vivek Ramaswamy had a blockbuster night of soundbites at the third debate in Miami, Florida as he went on the attack against his competitors on stage – but saved the most harsh attacks for Nikki Haley.
He also attacked Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and the trio of debate moderators, specifically calling out NBC News’ Kristen Welker.
Afterwards, Ramaswamy was the first to enter the post-debate spin room to face the media – walking out with his wife Apoorva.
As the media asked questions of the presidential hopeful and biotech entrepreneur, Apoorva, a surgeon, broke off to address one reporter who was suggesting that her husband intentionally was targeting women at the debate.
‘You went after three women – ‘ a reporter started to question, by the candidate’s wife cut-in and let her husband be touted off for a post-debate interview.
‘There is no one who is more supportive of women than my husband,’ she said, visibly upset by the suggestion.
Apoorva Ramaswamy issued a more full-throated defense of her husband after Wednesday’s debate when a reporter suggested that her husband and 2024 candidate Vivek Ramaswamy disproportionately attacked women on stage
Apoorva, a surgeon and mother-of-two, joined her husband Vivek in the post-debate spin room Wednesday evening and got more vocal in her defense of the 2024 candidate
‘He is an amazing man, he is a supporter of women,’ the mother-of-two added. ‘I am a surgeon, I’m working, I went to Yale for college and medical school and he has supported me in every stage of my career.’
‘He is extremely pro-woman. It is a shame to call Nikki Haley – or other people who are failing their responsibilities – as representatives of women,’ Apoorva said, piling on the attacks against Haley that her husband levied during the debate.
‘Do you think he regrets going after three women in the first few minutes of the debate?’ that reporter pushed.
‘I think he regrets not going after more people who have failed the American people,’ Apoorva replied. ‘This is not true – I am sick of these political people trying to separate us based on men and women.’
‘We are people, we can fail. Men can fail. Women can fail,’ she said. ‘Plenty – everyone’s done it on both sides. My husband is not – it’s an insane suggestion.’
While the third Republican primary debate devolved, yet again, the most explosive comments came during bitter exchanges between Ramaswamy and Haley – who were flanking Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
As Ramaswamy slung insults, Haley forcibly defended herself.
Following the debate, Ramaswamy told reporters that Haley shouldn’t ‘dish what she can’t take’ after saying at the second debate in September that she felt ‘dumber’ every time she had to hear her competitor speak.
He also said: ‘If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen.’
Haley slapped down Ramaswamy on-stage and called him ‘scum’ after he said his competitor is like ‘Dick Cheney in three-inch heels.’
Tensions were running high as Ramaswamy reached new lows by launching personal attacks at his rivals as the candidates went to battle in Miami to try and catch the frontrunner Donald Trump.
Haley demanded Ramaswamy keep her daughter’s name out of his mouth after he said she had a TikTok account and she claimed China and Russia were ‘salivating’ over the prospect of him becoming president.
She also later clarified that her heels are five inches and double as ‘ammunition.’
Beside going after Haley, Ramaswamy also used his opening remarks to dare RNC Chair McDaniel to come out on stage and resign.
‘I think there’s something deeper going on in the Republican Party here, and I am upset about what happened last night,’ Ramaswamy said, referencing a slew of GOP election losses, including in his home state of Ohio.
‘We’ve become a party of losers at the end of the day with the cancer of the Republican establishment,’ he added. ‘Let’s speak the truth. Since Ronna McDaniel took over as chairwoman of the RNC in 2017, we have lost 2018, 2020, 2022 – no red wave that never came.’
‘For that matter, Ronna, if you want to come on stage tonight, you want to look the GOP voters in the eye and tell them you resign, I’ll turn over and yield my time to you,’ he dared.
He continued in his first statements on the debate stage to go after the moderators.
‘Think about who’s moderating this debate. This should be Tucker Carlson, Joe Rogen and Elon Musk. We’d have ten times the viewership,’ he said.
‘And we’ve got the Democrats and we’ve got Kristen Welker here. Do you think the Democrats would actually hire Greg Gutfeld to host a democratic debate? They wouldn’t do it.’
‘Kristen – I’m going to use this time because this is about you in the media and the corrupt media establishment, ask you – the Trump-Russia collusion hoax that you pushed on this network for years, was that real or Hillary Clinton made-up disinformation? Answer the question. Go,’ he demanded.
The NBC News moderator did not get a chance to respond as the audience applauded and cheered.
