Now held at Newport, the first festival was hosted at Hells Field, Ford farm, near Godshill and was attended by about 10,000 people.

In 1970, after unexpectedly high attendance levels, Parliament added a section to the Isle of Wight County Council Act 1971, preventing overnight open-air gatherings of more than 5,000 people on the island without a special licence from the council.

Many artists have performed since the festival was revived two decades ago, including Amy Winehouse, The Rolling Stones, Queen + Adam Lambert and David Bowie.
