A father has been shot while trying to stop two masked intruders breaking into his home in the middle of night while his wife and daughters cowered in another room. 

Police said two armed offenders tried to enter the home in Donvale in Melbourne‘s east about 1.40am on Thursday. 

The 46-year-old man was shot during the incident, while his wife and 16-year-old daughter were unharmed.

He was taken to hospital in a stable condition with serious injuries.

A bullet also pierced the house’s entryway cupboard.  

Neighbour Ralph Learmont said he heard a ‘very loud’ bang.

‘It was a a very loud, piercing bang,’ he told 9News

Mr Learmont said he heard another ‘bang’ around 15-20 seconds later. 

It comes as police have launched a desperate manhunt after a series of carjackings in Melbourne’s south-east. 

They are hunting two men after there was four carjacking incidents across the city.

It is not known whether the two men are the same armed intruders who attempted to break in to the Donvale property.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said: ‘Police observed a Honda on the Princes Highway in Springvale driving erratically, before the vehicle took off at speed.

‘The vehicle was followed through the south-eastern suburbs by the Airwing before the occupants dumped the Honda and carjacked three people.’

The stolen cars collided with multiple other vehicles including police cars. 

 No one was seriously injured during the carjackings and collisions.

‘The males carjacked a fourth vehicle in the vicinity of Hoddle Street in Richmond and travelled city bound,’ the spokesperson added.

‘The vehicle and two occupants are yet to be located at this stage and the investigation is ongoing.

‘The vehicle is described as a silver 2009 Ford Falcon station wagon with registration XBX545.’
