A man has been charged over the alleged stabbing murder of a Sydney nurse – three months after her husband allegedly found her lying in their bedroom in a pool of blood.

Erin Gilbert, 42, was allegedly stabbed to death in the rental unit she shared with her husband Nicholas Gilbert, 38, in Merrylands, in Sydney’s west, before 11.30pm on Easter Sunday.

Mr Gilbert was arrested by police shortly after his wife’s death and spent almost 24 hours in a police cell, covered in his wife’s blood, and was told he could be charged over her death.

He was released without charge and insists he had nothing to do with his wife’s death.

On Tuesday afternoon, following a lengthy police investigation, it was confirmed Mr Gilbert’s friend Morten Jensen, 32, had been charged with murder at Auburn Police Station.

Daily Mail Australia can also reveal that Mr Gilbert was living in the unit he shared with his wife earlier in July, but struggled to pay rent and is now ‘on the street with my clothes in a bag.’

NSW Police will allege in court that Mr Jensen went to Ms Gilbert’s apartment ‘after a conflict had escalated’ and ‘attacked her with a bladed instrument’.

‘It is further alleged the man fled the scene on foot, before getting on a black and red mountain bike,’ a statement read.

Detectives believe Jensen ‘discarded the clothes he was wearing’ as he allegedly fled the scene, including a grew hooded jumper with a distinctive logo on the back.

Mr Jensen was remanded in custody and will appear in Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday.

Mr Gilbert told 9 News on Monday that he was in contact with Mr Jensen on the night of the alleged murder, but didn’t hear from him in the following days.

‘He was like a brother to me,’ Mr Gilbert said.

‘I thought it was strange he wasn’t coming to see me, he’s meant to be my best mate, he just disappeared.’

Two weeks after Ms Gilbert’s death, Mr Jensen was imprisoned for unrelated matters.

He is behind bars at Silverwater Correctional Facility, near Sydney’s Olympic Park.

Daily Mail Australia previously revealed Mr Gilbert was still living in the unit he shared with his late wife, but was struggling to pay rent due to a brain injury sustained during a car accident a few years ago.

Earlier in July he revealed looking at the blood stains on the carpet of the home they once shared made him break down.

‘I’ll be on the street in the next few days,’ he said at the time.

‘But it’s hard enough to stay there because of the (marks) in the carpet – I tear up every time I see them.’

‘But then again, it’s the only place I feel close to Erin.’

The couple married in 2020 and, on their first wedding anniversary, she made him a box filled with photos and love letters.

One letter read: ‘I don’t want you in my life, I need you in my life. You’re not my friend, you’re my best friend. I don’t like you, I love you and I’m glad I found you because I was absolutely lost without you.’

Another read: ‘Because of you all of my other dreams gave changed, now everything I’ve ever wanted will be only complete [because] you’re the one by my side.’

Mr Gilbert said he got goosebumps when he found the letters again.

‘It gave me happy tears and I still smile just thinking about it,’ he said.
