Kevin Mccarthy‘s ally Patrick McHenry on Tuesday took over temporarily as Speaker of the House, after McCarthy became the first Speaker in U.S. history to be ousted from his position.
The embattled McCarthy in January provided the House clerk a secret list of members who could temporarily take over, if the office became vacant.
McHenry, a nine-term North Carolina Republican, was revealed to be the first name on McCarthy’s list.

His removal came at the behest of Matt Gaetz, a Florida Republican and die-hard MAGA loyalist, who felt McCarthy had conceded too much ground in the budget debate to Democrats.
The budget was agreed on Saturday night, preventing a government shutdown at the 11th hour.
McHenry currently leads the House Financial Services Committee.
He will be tasked with leading the fractious House through the next few days, but his role is one of the most powerful posts in Congress.
The House speaker is also second in line of succession to the presidency, after the vice president.
