Migrants ‘desperate for water’ have been found in the back of two lorries, causing police to close a portion of the M4, it has emerged.

As many as 10 immigrants were found inside two HGVs yesterday that are understood to have been travelling from Europe, The Reading Chronicle reported.

Thames Valley Police triggered an ’emergency incident’, forcing officers to shut down motorway services in Reading early yesterday evening.

Officers ran into Greggs and WHSmith where they allegedly took ‘dozens of bottles of water’, telling staff it was ‘urgent’ and they were helping ‘critical patients who needed water’, a insider has claimed.

Emergency services remained on site while the trailers were searched and unloaded.

The source alleges the two vehicles involved were from ‘the same company’ and appeared to be ‘loaded refrigerated trailers’.

The lorries reportedly pulled into the services around 5.30pm yesterday after having been followed by four marked police vehicles.

‘Around 20 minutes after they were pulled into the services, I would say a good 10 people were taken out of the trailers,’ the insider told the newspaper.

Police, fire and ambulance crews responded to the scene and provided aid to the migrants. Officers reiterated online that there was ‘no risk to the public’ but advised people to avoid the area while they carried out their investigation.

It is unclear at this time if the lorry drivers face any charges.

MailOnline has approached Thames Valley Police for comment.
