A classic character and tale is brought to life in live-action for the first time with the new trailer for Disney’s Pinocchio.

Tom Hanks stars as Geppetto in the live-action adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s 1883 book The Adventures of Pinocchio, with Benjamin Evan Ainsworth voicing the title character.

The trailer gave fans a first look at the project, as well as Tom in the iconic role.

Robert Zemeckis directed and co-wrote the highly-anticipated adaptation, which debuts on the Disney Plus streaming service September 8.

The trailer begins with the boisterous voice of Stromboli (Giuseppe Battiston) proclaiming, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, the eighth wonder of the world, the one and only Pinocchio.’

We also get a glimpse at shots of Geppetto tinkering away on his beloved marionette and making him dance, along with a shot of Jiminy Cricket (Joseph Gordon-Levitt).

There is also a glimpse at the Blue Fairy (Cynthia Erivo), using her magical wand to turn Pinocchio from a wooden doll to a ‘real’ boy.

The Coachman (Luke Evans) tells Pinocchio, ‘You won’t be a puppet anymore, that’s for sure,’ as the iconic When You Wish Upon a Star song is sung. 

The trailer winds down with a number of dramatic shots and concluding with Geppetto telling Pinocchio, ‘You will always be my real boy.’ 

The live action Pinocchio will debut on Disney+ on September 8. 

Director Guillermo del Toro is also directing a stop-motion Pinocchio, debuting on Netflix in December.

The animated version of Pinocchio was released in 1940 by Walt Disney Productions.

The film was actually the second animated featured film produced by the company; the first was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937.

Pinocchio was voiced by Dick Jones, with Cliff Edwards voicing Jiminy Cricket, Christian Rub as Geppetto and Clarence Nash as Figaro.
