Video shows the shocking moment a Good Samaritan stepped in to save a young girl who was walking to school in Los Angeles when a homeless woman attacked her.

John Irias saw the violent interaction taking place and ran in to help her before he ended up getting slashed by the woman who had a box cutter in her hands.

The attack took place on May 26 in South Los Angeles just before 8am and involved the woman, unprovoked, swiping at the girl with a blow that took her down.

‘I saw the homeless person just passed me strike the little girl in the face,’ Irias told KTLA, saying he jumped into action. ‘That’s when I ran over to help.’

The man said he was thinking of his own daughter and that he knew he had to act.

‘There should be more people who should stand up to criminals,’ said Irias.

In an interview with FOX 11, Irias said the woman who attacked the young girl was yelling profanities at the young girl during the attack.

‘She was shouting racial slurs. She was saying like “I’m tired of you Hispanic people,”‘ he said of the homeless attacker.

‘It was just a random attack, just a hateful crime. Luckily I was wearing my glasses and when she slashed my face my glasses actually helped save my eyeballs,’ he said.

The video shows the young girl walking down the street peacefully with her backpack just as the homeless woman swings at her.

The blow brought the girl to the pavement and out of sight from the camera.

Luckily, Irias said he was still able to see what was happening and able to run over.

The video catches Irias running over and pushing the attacker off the girl. He was able to hold the woman down until police arrived at the scene.

In the meantime, however, he sustained a large gash to his face from box cutters.

‘The homeless person proceeded to take out a weapon and before I could find out what that was, I went for a takedown and I was slashed in the face,’ he said.

Victor Camarena, a friend of Irias’ who was across the street, heard the commotion and ran over to help him out.

‘By that time, John already has the suspect on the floor,’ Camarena told KTLA.

‘He’s gushing blood from the side of his face, asking me if it’s bad. I’m like, “It’s pretty bad bro,”‘ the bystander said of the injury Irias sustained.

Luckily, Irias was in the right place at the right time, he and Camarena said.

‘If everything hadn’t played out the way that it did that morning, from him being late to my house, from me not being able to find my car keys, God only knows what could have happened to that little girl,’ said Camarena.

‘He’s a hero,’ the bystander continued. Camarena also said Irias required stitches.

Irias said the girl did not appear injured and continued on her way to school after.

The homeless woman was arrested by LAPD. It’s unknown if charges have been filed.
