An elderly couple were awoken to a gang of knife-wielding burglars rummaging through their Alice Springs home.

The five males armed with ‘edged weapons’ had kicked down the front door of their Lovegrove Drive home, in Araluen, just after after 5am on Sunday.

They demanded money, cigarettes and alcohol from the 73-year-old man at the home as one of the knifemen held a blade to the throat of his partner, 72.

The men ferried alcohol to a red Holden Commodore driven by a female accomplice waiting across the road, with the ordeal lasting 30 minutes.

The 72-year-old woman was eventually able to escape through the back door before calling Triple-Zero.

Norther Territory Police have urged anyone who witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area at the time to contact police immediately.
