A man gored to death by a bull at a Spanish festival has been identified as a father-of-two who was a high-ranking executive for ceramic wall and floor tiles firm Pamesa.

Jose Antonio Subies, 61, died at a hospital in Valencia on Saturday night after suffering gore injuries which affected his liver and one of his lungs.

He was the chief executive officer of Pamesa’s South American group.

Mr Subies’ 63-year-old friend Vicente Fontestad, president of citrus fruit firm, was injured after being attacked by the same bull and remains in hospital after a leg operation.

He was expected to undergo a second op on his hand at Valencia’s Clinico Hospital yesterday.

Footage of the drama showed the two men being lifted up in the air by the bull, called Cocinero which in English translates as Cook, after it was set loose on the streets in La Pobla de Fornals near Valencia.

The dead man was born in the town and had helped organised the Bous Al Correr event where the incident happened around 7pm on Saturday.

Mr Subies and his friend are thought to have been trying to reach safety through a gap in security railings in front of a house in the area where the bull was set free when they became trapped in its path.

The Pamesa executive, who had worked for the firm for around three decades, went into cardiac arrest after being admitted to A&E and efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.

Friend Jordi Montagut, an export director for another firm, said in a social media post: ‘We will miss you.

‘It’s been many years, many flights, many trade fairs.

‘It’s been a pleasure to share this journey with you. Heaven will look better with the ceramics you’ll put in it.’

Jose Manuel Llaneza, Pamesa’s CEO, described his colleague’s death as a ‘huge blow’, saying: ‘Jose Antonio had spent practically all his working life at Pamesa. He was a wonderful person and an exceptional colleague.’

Well-wishers took to social media to offer their condolences to Mr Subies’ family.

But reactions to his death also included comments from animal lovers including one who said: ‘If you don’t know how to fight bulls why did you do this?

‘I’m never happy to hear about anyone dying but neither do I celebrate the death of an animal.’

Carmen Almagro added: ‘If he had had a different pastime, this wouldn’t have happened to him.’

Earlier this month horrifying footage came to light showing a distressed bull with its horns on fire being dragged down a street.

The bull, known as a ‘toro embolado’ – or ‘bull with balls’ – is a sight that can be witnessed in many Spanish towns during bull running events.

It sparked calls from non-profit organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for the practice to be outlawed and outrage on social media.

Alejandro Conquero was reported to be in a ‘serious’ condition after sustaining horrific injuries during the event in Cenicientos, in the region of Madrid.

The 28-year-old, from Huelva in Andalucia, was filmed being airlifted to hospital, after on site doctors diagnosed ‘a goring in the posterior perianal region, which dissects the rectum through the coccyx and could affect the external sphincter of the anus’.

In shocking video footage shared online, Conquero can be seen donning his traditional costume as he taunts a white bull with his pink and yellow cape.

He is seen getting closer and closer to the bull’s horns before he is all of a sudden tossed into the air by the animal.

The man lands on the sand on his stomach before the raging bull charges at him and gores him in between his legs.

Conquero is then thrust upright into the air, with the bull’s horn still attached to his rectum, before falling back to the ground.

Gruesome footage from the event in Castalla, Alicante Province, shows him being flung around as the animal uses its horns to throw him around.

Fleeing with other young men through the narrow streets of Castalla, the boy initially slips on the road.

As he tries to get up, the bull catches him and instantly uses its horns to knock him up against a wall.

The bull repeatedly crushes the teen – who was not named in local media – against the terraced street walls before picking him up with its horns again and bouncing him up in the air several times.

Back in July, the so-called ‘Messi of Matadors’ was seriously injured after being crushed by a 1,100lb bull in Santiago, Spain.

Andrés Roca Rey, 26, sustained multiple injuries and bruises covering his body after being gored and was immediately taken to hospital on July 25.

The bull, named Viruta, charged at the Peruvian, dragging him back into the boards around the stadium and throwing him into the air.

Roca Rey was seen left slumped against the wall as others rushed in to distract the bull and pull him to safety.

While Roca Rey has had his fair share of injuries over an eight-year career, spectators said this was the worst goring to date.
