Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s bid for the 2024 presidency could serve as more of a spoiler for Republicans than Democrats if he decides to run on an independent ticket, a new poll reveals. The Democratic longshot presidential candidate is teasing a major announcement on October 9 – the same date reported he will declare an independent bid instead of running against President Joe Biden in the primary.
It comes after Republicans have shown a liking to some of what RFK Jr. espouses on his presidential platform. This includes his skepticism toward the COVID-19 vaccine and plans to address the southern border crisis . While there is no solid polling to test Kennedy’s third-party bid, a new Quinnipiac University poll released this week shows that Republican voters like him a lot more than their Democrat counterparts. Republicans have a more favorable view of Kennedy by a 30-point margin, while Democrats have a more unfavorable view of him by a 43-point gap.
While 48 percent of Republicans have a favorable view of RFK Jr., only 14 percent of Democrats feel the same. The GOP voters have an unfavorable view of him at an 18 percent rate, compared to the commanding 57 percent who say they have a bad view of the candidate from the Democratic side. Meanwhile, independent voters are split – with 36 percent having a favorable view of Kennedy and 37 percent having an unfavorable view. What was initially seen as a longshot bid that could detract some votes from Biden’s reelection bid in the primary election this year is now turning into a spoiler that could spell more trouble for the Republicans in the general election next November.
Ironically, some Republican voters even have a more favorable view of Kennedy than other presidential candidates running in the GOP primary against far frontrunner Donald Trump. Biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and former Vice President Mike Pence are liked less than RFK Jr. by Republicans. Meanwhile, the current Democratic candidates is viewed similarly in favorability to Republican candidates including former South CArolina Sen. Tim Scott and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley. Only Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis beat Kennedy when it comes to favorability among right-leaning voters. Democrat voters never had a particularly positive view of Kennedy and his bid for the White House – but the distaste has grown in recent months.
RFK Jr. was underwater by just 14 points in mid-June with more favorable than favorable views from left-leaning voters to 23 points underwater later the same month. In July, the favorability to unfavorability was 26 points negative and in August 31 points underwater. Now, Kennedy is seen as 43 points behind in favorability among Democrats, the Quinnipiac poll reveals. As a lesser-known candidate, many voters across the political spectrum said they still don’t know enough about RFK Jr. as a candidate to levy a statement on his likability. Thirty-three percent of Republicans feel this way, 28 percent of Democrats and 26 percent of independent voters.
