President Joe Biden reached out to LSU women’s basketball forward Angel Reese and head coach Kim Mulkey Friday to congratulate them on their national title win.
According to the White House, Biden ‘spoke to LSU Tigers women’s basketball head coach Kim Mulkey’ to congratulate her on winning the national championship over Iowa and to invite the team to the White House.
Additionally, Biden spoke to Women’s Final Four Most Outstanding Player Angel Reese, ‘to congratulate her on LSU’s historic season and championship win.’
Jill Biden’s comments drew ire from across the world of sports, particularly from Reese who called the suggestion a ‘joke’.
President Joe Biden has invited LSU’s women’s basketball team to the White House
Biden phoned Angel Reese (L) and Kim Mulkey (R) and congratulated them both on the victory
Reese bristled at a suggestion from First Lady Jill Biden to invite runners-up Iowa to the White House as well – calling the idea a ‘joke’ after LSU won the title by a score of 102-85
President Biden also left a message for UConn head coach Dan Hurley to invite his team
After Dr. Biden made the suggestion, the President seemed to shut down the idea of inviting both Iowa and LSU to the White House.
In explaining why the team changed their minds, Reese said the novelty of a visit to the President’s Mansion is rare and the accomplishment should be celebrated.
‘In the beginning we were hurt — it was emotional because we know how hard we worked all year for everything,’ Reese said on ESPN Friday.
‘You don’t get that experience ever, and I know my team probably wants to go for sure and my coaches are supportive of that so I’m going to do what’s best for the team and we’ve decided we’re going to go.
‘I’m a team player. I’m going to do what’s best for the team. I’m the captain.’
Before the national championship game even started, the Tigers refused to speak to Jill Biden due to a perceived snub by the President for picking them to not make the title game.
Per the press release, Biden also left a message for UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley to congratulate him and the Huskies on winning the men’s title and to invite them to the White House for a celebration as well.
The release said that no specific dates for either visit has been set.
