A man has tragically drowned while trying to rescue a girl in the surf at a popular beach.

The man, believed to be in his 70s, was pulled onto the shore unconscious near the Fingal Spit at Port Stephens on the NSW coast around 11am on Easter Sunday. 

Paramedics were unable to revive the man.

It’s understood the man had entered the surf to help save a girl facing difficulty in the water.

She was also brought back to shore and assessed by paramedics.

Port Stephens-Hunter police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
