Numerous symptoms can be attributed to Covid so it can be difficult to tell whether you have caught the virus or if you are suffering from another illness. Symptoms such as continous cough and high temperature, for example, could be mistaken for the flu. Are the symptoms of a cold similar to Covid?

The NHS say there are three main symptoms those with Covid are likely to experience.

What are the main symptoms of coronavirus?

A high temperature can indicate you have caught the virus.

If you feel hot to touch on your chest or back this shows you likely have a high temperature and could have Covid.

A new, continuous cough is one of the most common symptoms of coronavirus.

If you are coughing repeatedly for more than an hour or if you have three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours you may have Covid.

A third common symptom is a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste.

Most people with symptoms have at least one of these three.

But, about one in three people with Covid don’t suffer from any symptoms.

There are less common symptoms that should not be ignored. Here is a guide to the lesser-known ones.

Covid sufferers have sometimes confused the virus for the common cold as symptoms can include a runny nose and congestion.

These symptoms may be less common and are not listed on the NHS website outlining the classic symptoms of Covid.

Some experts have argued the official list of COVID-19 symptoms soul be expanded to avoid cases of the virus going unnoticed.

The most commonly reported symptoms according to a survey by the Office for National Statistics are cough, headache and fatigue.

Despite this headaches and feelings of fatigue are not outlined as common symptoms of the virus by the NHS.

The Zoe Covid Symptom study has reported symptoms similar to the common cold, a headache, sore throat and runny nose are now the most commonly reported symptoms.

The study also said these were the most common symptoms of the Delta variant which is presently the most common variant in the UK.

Experts writing in the British Medical Journal expressed concern the current list of common symptoms could “miss or delay identification of many Covid cases.”

They have called for the UK to create a broader list of symptoms to look out for in line with other countries such as the US Centres for Disease Control.

This lists 11 more symptoms than the UK and the World Health Organisation includes nine more.
