The 23-year-old tennis player became the first Kazakh athlete to reach a major semifinal after defeating Ajla Tomljanovic in the 2022 Wimbledon Championships quarterfinals. She has reached the grand slam semi-finals and will play against Simona Halep, the 2019 champion.

In return for changing her nationality, the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation provided her with financial aid, which she chose over other offers to play collegiate tennis in the United States.

She represented Kazakhstan at the US Open’s first-ever Grand Slam qualifying round, although she was unable to proceed to the main tournament.

Rybakina was born in Russia and spent her youth representing her nation. Despite attaining a junior career-high of No. 3, she, like many other Russian players before her, received no assistance from the Russian Federation. She chose to accept the offer made by Kazakistan.
