Dwyane Wade Now Cancer-Free, Says Gabrielle Union. In a January episode of The WY Network podcast, Dwyane Wade revealed that he had surgery on December 18, 2023, during which 40% of his right kidney was removed due to a cancerous tumor.
Gabrielle Union has shared an update on her husband’s health following this major medical event. The 43-year-old Hall of Fame basketball player confirmed the surgery and stated that he is now cancer-free, although he recognized the difficulties he faced during this period.
When Sunny Hostin asked in the February 27 episode of The View if Wade is “better now,” Union, 52, responded, “Yes, he’s had the surgery and he’s cancer-free, but it was a challenge.”
Union described her initial reaction to the news of Wade’s cancer diagnosis as one of deep shock. “You hear cancer [and] you’re paralyzed because you think of the absolute worst-case scenario. I’ve had so many friends who are cancer survivors,” she said. “I didn’t go there; I went to ‘he’s gone.'”
She mentioned that it took time for her and her family to come to terms with the situation, as Wade had opted to keep his diagnosis private. “He didn’t tell everybody. He didn’t even tell our whole family. He really wanted this to be very under the radar. He didn’t tell anyone,” Union explained.
The couple has a 6-year-old daughter, Kaavia James. Additionally, Wade has two older children, Zaire, 23, and Zaya, 17, from his previous marriage to Siohvaughn Funches, as well as an 11-year-old son, Xavier, with Aja Metoyer. He is also the legal guardian of his 21-year-old nephew, Dahveon Morris.
During his January podcast appearance, Wade reflected on the emotional impact of his diagnosis, saying, “It was the first time that my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak.” He described that time as “probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life,” admitting that he struggled when he was alone. Despite his hesitation to show vulnerability, he acknowledged that his family was a major motivation for him to go through with the surgery.
Wade mentioned, “I had to make a personal choice about my health. I thought about the fact that if this tumor or cyst on my kidney turns out to be cancerous, I would probably need surgery at 41 to remove it and stop any possible spread.”
