Below Deck has featured many controversies over the years but few have been as shocking as the incident that went down on Monday’s episode of Below Deck Down Under which resulted in not one but two crew members being fired.

Bosun Luke Jones was fired for sexual misconduct after climbing into crew member Margot Sisson’s bed while she was sleeping without consent.

Second stew Laura Bileskalne was also let go after claiming Luke was wrongfully dismissed.

During the episode, Margot had claimed she was ‘really drunk’ at dinner and chief stewardess Aesha Scott made sure she safely got into bed at the end of the night, despite Luke’s attempts to get Margot in the jacuzzi.

She told Aesha: ‘I am glad that you’re here. I don’t want to go in the jacuzzi, I want to go bed. All I want is water and bed, no Luke.’

Despite this, Luke climbed into bed with her, causing producers to step in.

Once Aesha returned to the cabin, she tells her friend that Luke had been in her cabin and ran out ‘naked.’

‘Oh my God. Ew, he was naked?’ Margot responded, to which Aesha asked: ‘Did you consent to him being in here?’

‘No, I was asleep,’ said Margot. ‘I did not invite that at all.’

Aesha, in tears, told Captain Jason Chambers that Luke had tried to ‘take advantage of Margot’s drunkenness’ while she was ‘completely unconscious’ in bed.

The next morning, Jason gathered the rest of the crew members and informed them that Luke’s contract was being terminated.

After Laura complained that Luke should’ve just been given a ‘warning’ and not fired, while adding he was simply ‘joking’ and ‘drunk,’ Jason fired her as well.

After the episode aired, Margot thanked Aesha for ‘the way she recognized the vulnerability of the situation I was in and her courageous intervention on my behalf.’

She also praised Jason ‘for his immediate response to the situation, leaving no room for any BS.’

But the Below Deck franchise is no stranger to enduring scandals both on air and behind the scenes.

The original Below Deck gained popularity for its shocking drama from Kate’s phallic ‘rocket ship’ towel art to bosun Eddie Lucas and Rocky Dakota’s affair.

This led to the launch of Below Deck Med which did not disappoint – featuring the firing of controversial chef Mila Kolomeitseva with even chief stew Hannah Ferrier breaking maritime law.

Additional spinoffs like Below Deck Sailing Yacht provided its own controversies including Dani Soares and Jean-Luc Cerza Lanaux’s baby drama.

Here are the show’s wildest scandals from over the years.

Laura Bileskalne forced herself on deckhand Adam Kodra after climbing in his bed despite him saying ‘no’

Laura Bileskalne, who was fired shortly after the recent incident with Luke, herself sparked outrage after climbing into crewmate Adam Kodra’s bunkbed and trying to massage him.

Adam had already told Laura multiple times that he wasn’t interested in pursuing anything with her beyond a friendship, but the stubborn stewardess wouldn’t take no for an answer and kept pursuing him.

‘I’m not interested in Laura in the slightest,’ Adam told producers. ‘I’ve told her a million times, like I just wanna be friends, but it’s just not getting the point across so I don’t know what to do.’

He added, ‘It’s a little awkward because we work together. She needs to stop that s**t.’

After a night of drinking, Laura followed Adam into his cabin, despite the fact that he had already rebuffed her advances and made it clear that she couldn’t sleep in his bed.

‘We need to close the door,’ she pleaded while holding a tube of moisturizer in her hand.

Once he climbed into the top bunk and tried to go to sleep, Laura started pawing at him before squeezing moisturizer on his back.

She then climbed up into the bunk, at which point producers intervened and ordered her to get down.

‘Laura, I got a message from producers telling you to come down,’ the cameraman informed her.

She then kept rubbing Adam’s back, before a producer burst in and told her to ‘step down’ and go back to her own cabin.

Laura crawled down, but not before leaning in to give an uninterested Adam a kiss on the cheek.

Eddie Lucas initially denied cheating on his girlfriend with Rocky Dakota on Below Deck season three

Controversial: When Eddie and Rocky hooked up, he had a girlfriend at the time – before their hookups came to light, Rocky was already a controversial figure on the ship

Below Deck fans who watched from the start remember Eddie and Rocky’s laundry room hookups on season three and the way the bosun handled the whole situation.

Before their romance came to light, Rocky was already a controversial figure on the ship.

The stewardess complained frequently and made a series of erratic decisions – including stripping down and jumping off the boat after Chef Leon Walker was fired for causing a kitchen fire.

So when Rocky came clean to her coworkers that she and Eddie were caught ‘doing laundry’ in a compromising position, they were hesitant to believe her.

At the time, Rocky confided in fellow Below Deck stew Amy Johnson, telling her ‘it was three times in the laundry room, one time in the restroom, and we kept it under wraps.’

She also shared that it was so good that she ‘wanted to marry him.’

Amy told Showbiz Cheat Sheet her reaction to Rocky’s confession was ‘shock’ and ‘almost like, “I don’t believe you.”‘

She explained: ‘I was shocked when Rocky told us because he had just been dissing her so much to the point where I’m like, “Okay, Eddie, like I know she’s tough to work with but…”‘

Additionally, Eddie had a girlfriend at the time and initially denied the affair.

However, as the crew was gathered around the fire pit during the season’s finale, Eddie fessed up to their deeds in the laundry room.

The entire crew was disappointed but none more than Captain Lee Rosbach.

‘[If you] don’t mind [me] telling you, I’m disappointed. It was just a colossal f**k up,’ he told the bosun when they had a moment alone.

Eddie left the show that season after being on Below Deck despite being in it from the start.

When asked if his girlfriend broke up with him after the incident on Watch What Happens Live, he explained, ‘No, actually, not right away. No, we worked on it for a while. It ended worse than ever.’

Surprisingly, he returned to the show five years later for season eight and claimed he had learned his lesson.

‘I’ve definitely aged both in number and wisdom, I hope. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, but then again, I don’t know anybody that hasn’t made mistakes in life,’ he told Bravo Insider

‘But what’s important to me is learning from those mistakes and trying to move forward from there.

‘I’ve looked at my past relationships, I’ve looked at my past professional choices, and I’ve been, like, “Well, that was stupid of me. I probably shouldn’t have done that.”‘

‘And so from that, I’ve taken a lot of time and done a lot of self-reflection and tried to be a better person as much as I could.’

Hannah Ferrier was a Below Deck Med staple from the very first season so it shocked fans when she was fired.

Bosun Malia White had reported her to Captain Sandy for having Valium and a vape pen with marijuana on board.

While the medication was prescribed to her for anxiety, she didn’t have it cleared which is a violation of maritime law. Because of this, Sandy fired her.

When Sandy told Hannah to show her the medication, the captain accused her of trying to flush it away.

‘You can see on my face when she opens that bathroom door. My pants are undone. I’m going to the bathroom,’ she told Decider upon reflecting on the incident.

‘I’m like, why would I flush my medication? It wouldn’t have crossed my mind to flush Valium, because I don’t think I’m doing anything wrong. It’s anti-anxiety medication.

‘It’s not something I was hiding. It wasn’t like I went on and I was like, “Ooh, I have this Valium. I can’t let anyone see it.” To me, it’s just anti-anxiety medication.

‘I made the mistake of not clearing it when I brought it on the boat. Because I’ve always had it, every year. It just wasn’t really a process that went through my mind. That was my mistake. But yeah, it certainly wasn’t something I was trying to hide.’

She also noted that her vape pen had CBD in it which is legal in Spain.

Hannah – who claimed she was candid about her struggles over the course of her time on the show – was suspicious about the timing. Malia had reported her after Hannah refused to change rooms when her boyfriend came to visit.

However, Malia has denied these claims.

‘I already had my bunk at that point, so, yeah, it was because it was my duty to. I don’t want to lose my licensing,’ she said on Watch What Happens Live.

Instead, Malia claimed that Hannah asking the bosun for the drug while having a panic attack sparked her decision to tell Captain Sandy.

‘I think in that moment, when she asked for Valium, is when it really hit me that those were the pills that she was taking every night, all season. That’s when it became a real serious thing for me,’ she explained.

Hannah’s case wasn’t helped by the fact that she and Sandy had butted heads over her behavior in the past.

The chief stew had been caught messaging one of their charter guests after they left the ship, which is considered unprofessional and very much frowned upon.

The drama surrounding Hannah’s firing continued on after filming wrapped. Once the episode aired, Hannah tweeted a photo of the evidence that Malia presented against her, which caused her to be fired.

‘I like Malia’s arranging skills. So that’s prescribed Valium, CBD (which is legal in Spain), a lighter (not sure what this has to do with anything) and my passport holder,’ she tweeted.

She continued: ‘And for anyone who’s interested the prescription is on the other side of the box as shown… #belowdeckmed.’

Malia indirectly responded with a lengthy post via Instagram in which she wrote in part, ‘I never said you CAN’T have medications – you just have to follow proper procedures that are in place to protect ALL crew members.’

‘The Captain of the vessel has the right to know who might be taking what & when!’

However, after the blowback, Malia admitted she had some regrets surrounding the situation.

‘I don’t regret doing my job, but I do regret how I handled it,’ Malia told Us Weekly

Hannah eventually spoke out to Peninsula Living about how it was unfair that she was painted out ‘like a drug addict’ for bringing undeclared anti-anxiety medication on board.

‘Anxiety medication is for a mental illness, so it shouldn’t be painted like, “You’re a drug addict smuggling drugs on board.”‘

The yachtie also admitted that she was ‘sad that it ended that way’ after so many years on the hit Bravo series.

‘But the response I got from people suffering from anxiety was amazing,’ she added.

Below Deck season nine star Heather Chase was slammed after using the N-word in an exchange with her black co-star Rayna Lindsey.

Rayna had used the phrase while the two women were heading to the bathroom during a night out and Heather enthusiastically shouted it back.

After they returned to the boat, the deckhand explained to the stew that she shouldn’t use the racial slur as a white woman.

Heather claimed didn’t recall saying the N-word but eventually apologized and later said Rayna’s comments ‘made me feel bad.’

Rayna responded: ‘That’s ok, I still love you, I’m telling you, just be careful.’

When the episode aired, Heather issued an apology on Instagram.

‘I am sorry for the hurt my ignorance caused Rayna in tonight’s episode. While I apologized to Rayna throughout the season, I cannot express enough how remorseful I am,’ Heather wrote in a statement.

‘Over the past nine months since this episode was filmed, I have learned how my words and actions can affect others and I vow to do better in the future.’

Rayna expressed how watching it back was just as painful for her during an Instagram Q&A.

‘It’s like watching a car crash over and over again,’ the Bravo personality wrote, adding that Heather seemed ‘too comfortable’ repeating the N-word back at her. ‘Like I said, she said that s**t regularly.’

The moment tainted their relationship and caused friction between the two throughout the entire season.

She felt she couldn’t express her true feelings, stating, ‘What if I had snapped off, then what would I have been called, ghetto? And then when I try and shake it off, ‘m called fake. It doesn’t matter what I do.’

She also accused bosun Eddie of not having her back.

‘Eddie apologized to me three times. The first time he apologized to me, you know what he did? “Well you say the F-word when you’re drunk.” You tried to ruin me, Eddie.’ Rayna said.

Production then played an unaired clip of Eddie making this accusation but couldn’t find any footage of her saying the F-word.

Ultimately, Rayna and Heather parted on good terms and Rayna told the stewardess that she didn’t think she was racist and wished she was the best.

Ashton Pienaar punched a van during an altercation with Kate Chastain – who left the show after Below Deck season seven

Below Deck chief Kate Chastain struggled with the ‘Brü Crew’ during season seven. The feud reached dangerous levels which lead to bosun Ashton Pienaar punching van in drunken frustration after getting in a heated argument with Kate

Below Deck chief stew Kate has had her fair share of challenges over her many years on the show but dealing with the infamous ‘Brü Crew’ took the cake.

The male deck crew members dubbed themselves with the nickname and lead an aggressive campaign to take the stew down.

The feud reached dangerous levels which lead to bosun Ashton Pienaar punching van in drunken frustration after getting in a heated argument with Kate.

Things came to a head when Kate was stuck in a car with Ashton, Tanner Sterback and Kevin Hobson when the boys were bantering about a phone call Tanner had with his mom.

Kate chimed in, ‘What else do you guys want to talk about besides Tanner’s mom? Ashton, what’s going on with your mom?’

Clearly agitated, Ashton whipped back and faced Kate, stating, ‘Really? That was such a f**king weak blow.’

He then got in Kate’s face, saying, ‘If you think you’re such a f**king better person, for calling my mother out and bringing it up as f**king Tanner’s mom… No, no. Hold on. Get the f**k over yourself, Kate.’

She then called him a ‘psycho’ which caused him to go on a drunken rant and eventually punch the van.

‘I thought Ash was gonna punch her in the face,’ Tanner told Decider of the incident.

‘He’s punching the window and almost put a hole in the window and I’m like dude, chill out, it’s all good.’

‘I was scared but also just in shock,’ Kate explained. ‘I was in a place where I could not have escaped if I wanted to.’

‘I played possum, just froze and held still. “Why is [Ashton] so mad right now? Why is he punching windows? Why is everybody screaming stop the van? What’s he gonna do? What is happening?” It all kinda happened really fast.’

Kate had spoken out to Decider about how she hated the ‘very high school version of boys versus girls’ dynamic that brewed over the course of the season.

‘I was working with illogical a**holes. I don’t know what I could’ve done differently. I was outnumbered but also it was a very bizarre situation,’ she added at the time.

Ashton apologized for his behavior during the Below Deck season seven reunion.

‘I was completely drunk, I was out of my mind, I’m sorry for that,’ he told Kate.

‘I hate the fact that everything has been spun the way it is. But you know what, I have to take responsibility for that because I’m the one that behaved the way I did.’

Ultimately, Kate revealed that she was stepping away not only from the show but yachting as a whole shortly after the reunion aired.

‘After many months of reflection and internal discussions, I have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new land based role,’ the Bravo personality wrote via Instagram, jokingly quoting Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from royal duties.

‘I intend to step back as a senior member of the Below Deck Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support His Majesty Andy Cohen.’

Below Deck Med season four chef Mila Kolomeitseva shocked viewers when she let her true feels about homosexuality be known.

On the way back to the boat after a night out, Mila claimed that after seeing crew member Jack Stirrup’s nose ring, she  ‘would’ve questioned him as well,’ in regards to his sexuality.

Fellow deck team member Travis Michalzik stated, ‘Mila, you’re classic Russian, a homophobe.’

‘Ooh la la, yes we are,’ she responded sarcastically before stating, ‘I don’t want to see a man kissing a man in front of me.’

In that moment, Jack leaned forward and kissed Travis, who said, ‘I don’t mind it, it gets me going.’

Mila then ranted, ‘In your home, you can do whatever you want. I don’t want my son to be growing up and seeing two men kissing each other and thinking this is normal because this is not f**king normal. It’s not f**king normal.’

She continued: ‘I love Putin. I am f**king proud of Putin, yes, and I’m very proud of him that he doesn’t let the gay parades happen in our country.’

Travis responded, ‘I’m gonna get out of this van and I will never speak to you as a human being ever again.’

‘Look at you, it’s like some personal feelings being touched here,’ she said.

‘Maybe I’ve been with men. You don’t know that. Maybe my friends are them. Homosexuality is absolutely natural, so f**k,’ he snapped back.

‘Your opinion on gays shows your opinion on humanity which is f**king terrible and I don’t support it.’

Mila retorted, ‘Why is f**king an animal is not normal? But how can a man f**k a man?’

‘Sit on the opposite end of this fucking table from me, you absolute oxygen thief,’ he then said.

Even though no one reported the incident to Captain Sandy, Mila was eventually fired anyway for the quality of her cooking.

After attempting to serve the guest nachos, struggling to make pancakes from a box and serving canned seafood, Sandy told the chef her time was up.

‘As a human being, I have all the compassion in the world. But as a captain, I have to let you go,’ she told Mila.

When Sandy – who is a lesbian herself – heard about Mila’s comments, she was shocked.

‘Someone mentioned it, and I just thought, “Wow.” So that’s her opinion. That doesn’t reflect [me],’ she told Bravo’s Daily Dish. ‘She can have her opinion. I don’t really care. Doesn’t reflect on me. It reflects on her.’

Chief stew Hannah had her own heated reaction to the comments.

‘She’s definitely not someone I would choose to spend my personal time with, to say the least,’ she told Us Weekly.

‘I struggle a lot because one of my best friends in Australia is gay and Muslim. I’ve seen for the last 13 years that it’s a very difficult path to go down.

‘It’s not really a choice. It is what it is. I don’t condone or believe her views at all. At the same time, she was brought up very differently to you and I, it’s a fine line.’

Dani Soares and Jean-Luc Cerza Lanaux had a steamy boat-mance throughout the season that led to a whole heap of complications.

Dani had gotten pregnant during the time of filming and while Jean-Luc initially denied being the father, a paternity test proved otherwise.

Ironically, she claimed earlier on in the season that she wouldn’t have minded if Jean-Luc had gotten her pregnant.

‘The more I get to know you, I like you more. Let’s have sex tonight. And if I get pregnant, that’s God’s will,’ she told Jean-Luc.

Then in April 2021, as the season was airing, Dani announced she was, in fact, going to have baby.

She uploaded a picture of her sporting a baby bump on Instagram, writing, ‘It’s just you and I little baby.’

Fans were intrigued when he implied that her baby daddy wouldn’t be in the picture and wondered who the mystery man was.

Dani clarified the timeline during the reunion, stating there was only one option.

‘Well, let’s put it this way, this baby was made during the season while we had cameras 24/7 with us and I only slept with one guy,’ Dani told Andy Cohen.

However, Dani said J.L. ‘thinks it’s not his child… And he doesn’t want to have anything to do with it.’

The former stewardess added that J.L. was ‘supportive in the beginning, and then it just changed.’ She said that on New Year’s, she received a text from J.L. reading, ‘Don’t go around telling people I’m the dad of this child. And I want a DNA test.’

‘I need you to know that I did support your decision and still do. I really hope that we can co-parent together and have respect for one another like we did.’

Eventually, he did take paternity test which proved that he was the father before J.L. shared the news on Instagram.

‘I can’t let 2022 go any further without sharing some beautiful news,’ he wrote.

‘An international DNA test that was done a while ago was no small feat. I’m happy and proud to say sweet and beautiful Lilly rose is my daughter.’

He continued: ‘Dani and I have been working and communicating together to the best of our ability; given Dani is a full-time mother and worker, and I being gone for extended periods of time not knowing when I will step back on land.’

‘This is imperative for the sake of our daughter as she needs both parents in her life.’

The deck team member was edited out of the show partway through the season after a racist meme he had shared surfaced.

‘Peter Hunziker of Below Deck Mediterranean has been terminated for his racist posts,’ a Bravo spokesperson told People at the time.

‘Bravo and [production company] 51 Minds are editing the show to minimize his appearance for subsequent episodes,’ the network added.

The firing occurred at the height of the Black Lives Matter movement shortly after Vanderpump Rules stars Stassi Schroeder, Kristen Doute, Max Boyens and Brett Caprioni were fired for similar behavior.

‘Be safe, stay well, and always think before you post,’ he added. ‘With love, Pete.’

Perhaps being edited out was the best thing to happen to the yachtie because his brief time on the show had not been smooth sailing.

In the early episodes, he was reprimanded by Captain Sandy after referring to his boss, bosun Malia, as ‘sweetie’ or ‘sweetheart.’
