Tomato Extracts May Inhibit The Growth Of Stomach Cancer

Hail, all tomato lovers! A new study has found that tomato extracts can inhibit the growth of cancer cells in the stomach. Read on to know how it works.

Can you imagine your salad or sandwich without tomatoes? Thought so, we cannot either. Known for its rich and tangy flavour, tomato is native to South America. They are the primary dietary source of lycopene, an antioxidant associated with a variety of health advantages, including a lower risk of heart disease and cancer. That’s right; it is more than just a tasty fruit! A recent study has found that tomato extracts have been discovered to suppress the development and malignant cloning of stomach cancer cells in recent research, paving the path for new treatments for the fatal illness. The study examined whole tomato extracts for their potential to combat stomach cancer cell lines and was published in the Journal of Cellular Physiology.

Tomato Extract May Prevent, Treat Stomach Cancer

Daniela Barone, a researcher at the Oncology Research Centre of Mercogliano (CROM) in Italy, said that the antitumoral effect appears to be unrelated to individual components, such as lycopene, and instead suggests that tomatoes as a whole should be examined. After analysing the tomato extracts for their ability to tackle gastric cancer cell lines, the researchers found that extracts of San Marzano and Corbarino varieties of tomato were able to inhibit the growth and cloning behaviour of malignant cells.

As per the results, the treatment that inhibited the capacity of the cancer cells to migrate stopped the cell cycle through the regulation of retinoblastoma family proteins and particular cell cycle inhibitors and eventually caused cancer cell death by apoptosis.

Antonio Giordano, professor at the University of Siena in Italy said, “Our results prompt further assessment of the potential use of specific nutrients not only in the cancer prevention setting but also as a supportive strategy along with conventional therapies.” Barone added that in various phases of a tumour, different species may have distinct impacts. Though various tomato components have been studied in experimental settings for their capacity to inhibit tumour growth, some studies have looked at the effects of tomatoes as a whole.
