Baby twins who were run down in their pram by a drunk driver ten times over the limit have miraculously survived.

The young children were being pushed along by their mother on an afternoon walk in the park when the out-of-control car came hurtling towards them.

As the horrified parent tried to drag her one-year-old twins to safety, the Lada had slammed into the pram, sending the toddlers flying to the ground and the pram somersaulting through the air.

Incredibly, the babies survived the impact but the drunk driver only narrowly avoided a second tragedy after one of the twins landed behind the wheel.

Stunned eye witnesses said the drunk had been about to reverse before the children’s distraught mother screamed at him to stop.

The hysterical mother was then seen cradling her bleeding and crying babies as passers-by phoned the police and an ambulance.

Paramedics rushed the twins to hospital where their condition is said to be stable.

Marina Matveeva, 54, who had been passing through the park in the city of Sevastopol in Crimea, said: ‘I was going for a walk when I saw this car suddenly go onto the grass and head towards the mum and her children.

‘When it hit them, the stroller went spinning through the air and one of the babies landed very near to the car’s rear wheel.

‘The driver was about to reverse, but the mother screamed so loudly he stopped.

‘If he hadn’t [stopped] he would have surely crushed the baby. She threw her body over theirs to protect them.’

Police arrived minutes later and found the mother sobbing over the twins and the drunk still sat behind the wheel.

He claimed he had skidded off the road to avoid a car coming towards him but when officers breathalysed him, they found he was ten times over the legal alcohol limit.

The driver also failed to produce a driving license, saying that he had lost it, although he was able to hand over papers for the car.

He now faces charges of drinking and driving as well as endangering the lives of others.
