Mark Stoops’ Dad Was His Coach When In School

Mr. Ron and Evelyn Stoops had six children, including Mark Stoops, who was born in 1968 in Youngstown, Ohio.

His secondary education was completed at Cardinal Mooney High School, where his father worked as a defensive coordinator and assistant coach. The four Stoops brothers were coached by their father while attending Mooney High School.

Mark played on the University of Iowa’s secondary team, which was coached by Hall of Famer Hayden Fry. Throughout his career, he appeared in four different bowl games.

Fry hired Stoops as a graduate assistant coach during the 1990 and 1991 football seasons at Iowa. Stoops had previously won the Big Ten championship and made it to the Rose Bowl as a player for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Stoops worked as a graduate assistant coach for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 1989 to 1991.

He was the athletic director and defensive backs coach at Nordonia High School in Macedonia, Ohio, after leaving Iowa (1992–1995).

Stoops was hired as a Kansas State assistant coach by Jim Leavitt, the team’s head coach at the time, and was named defensive backs coach for the South Florida Bulls in 1996.

From 1997 to 1999, Stoops was the defensive backs coach for the University of Wyoming Cowboys football team. Stoops was an assistant coach for Dana Dimel’s Wyoming team.

Stoops joined the University of Houston Cougars in 2000 as co-defensive coordinator (along with Dick Bumpas) and safeties coach after following Dimel to his new position at the university.

Miami (FL) — Stoops took over as defensive backs coach for the University of Miami Hurricanes in February 2001, succeeding Chuck Pagano. Pagano had resigned to become the Cleveland Browns’ defensive coordinator.

Arizona —  Mike, Mark’s brother, was named head coach of the Arizona Wildcats during the 2004 season after being offered the position. Following that, Mike hired Mark as a member of his team.

Florida State —  On December 11, 2009, Stoops announced his acceptance of a defensive coordinator position at Florida State University. Mark Stoops is Kentucky’s all-time winningest coach.

Stoops As The Head Coach Of The University of Kentucky Football Program

On November 27, 2012, Stoops was named head coach of the University of Kentucky football team, succeeding Joker Phillips, who was fired following a 2-10 season, the Wildcats’ worst in school history.

Stoops’ first year as coach of the Kentucky football team saw the team finish 2-10, but they improved to 5-7 in each of the next two seasons.

Covid-Affected 2020 Season

Stoops leads Kentucky to a 20-17 victory over Iowa in the Citrus Bowl in 2022. Kentucky now has its second 10-win season since 2018, its second Citrus Bowl victory in four years, and its fourth consecutive bowl victory.

Season of 2022

Stoops will be in his tenth season as head coach of the football team in 2022, making him the head coach with the longest tenure in the program’s history. Stoops earned his 60th win as a head coach in Week 1 when Kentucky defeated Miami (OH) 37-13.

This victory tied Bear Bryant for the most in program history. He became Kentucky’s all-time winningest football coach after defeating the Florida Gators on the road by a score of 26-16 in Week 2.
