A reporter provoked uncontrollable laughter on air when he accidentally told a radio host ‘I love you’ while he was texting his mother during a live broadcast.
Philip Wegmann, who covers the White House for independent news site RealClearPolitics, appeared on WMAL radio station in Washington D.C. on Thursday afternoon.
The Indiana-native was signing off from an interview with host Chris Stigall, who was promoting one of Wegmann’s recent articles when he responded: ‘I love you. Thank you.’
Stigall was left shocked and began asking if that really happened before he erupted in laughter and said he had no idea Wegmann was such a ‘big fan’ and joked that the ‘smoke was getting to everybody.’
Wegmann took to Twitter to explain he got a text from his mother Elizabeth while the segment was wrapping up and he accidently said what he was typing out loud.

Wegmann was texting his mother Elizabeth when he told WMAL radio host Chris Stigall ‘I love you’ and he erupted with laughter and said he had no idea Wegmann was such a ‘big fan’
The reporter was discussing politics news stories on the radio show before the slip.
Stigall was sharing his latest article and said: ‘And the most recent piece today went to print, “Mike Pence takes the fight to Trump.” Thank you, Phil, very much. Great to catch up.’
But Wegmann, who was in the middle of texting his mother Elizabeth, responded: ‘I love you. Thank you,’ before their call ended.
The radio host was left shocked and confused and he said: ‘ Uh did he just say he loved me, Dave?
‘Did I just hear Philip say he loved me? Did he think he was talking to his wife for a minute?
‘I could swear I just heard him say, “I love you.” Did he not just say that? Must be a big fan. I had no idea Philip Wegmann was such a Chris Stigall fan.’
Wegmann then pointed to the huge cloud of smoke from the Canadian wildfires which have engulfed cities in America as one reason for the reporter’s declaration of love.
He joked: ‘It’s the smoke. I think the smoke’s getting to everybody. Seriously, could we get the tape of that?
‘I wanna replay–I’ve never had a guest actually say that in closing. “I love you.” Sorry, Phil. I’m married. This is very uncomfortable.’
Wegmann took to Twitter to explain his choice of words and revealed he was texting his mother at the time and accidently read what he was typing out loud.

‘During a radio interview, as the show was wrapping, I got a text from my mother,’ he wrote.
‘The host started to say “thanks for joining us,” and rather than going with the usual “thanks for having me,” I accidentally said what I was texting…
‘Out loud, on air, I replied, “Love you too.”
‘I am a very serious journalist.’
Stigall then addressed it again after a break for the traffic and weather reports and said he spoke with Wegmann about it.
‘What I didn’t know, Philip Wegmann, who we were just talking to a little while ago from RealClearPolitics, my guest, he’s apparently an enormous fan,’ he said.
‘And I was a little taken aback, wasn’t sure how to respond when he shared with me very candidly his open feelings for me here live moments ago on WMAL. Take a listen again.’
He then played Wegmann’s outburst again and burst out laughing.
‘During the break we checked in with Phil to make sure we heard him correctly,’ Stigall explained to listeners.
‘He texted an expletive and then said, “I was reading a text from my mother!”‘
The radio host began to laugh even more and said: ‘It’s all right, Phil. I am a married man, but I love you too.’
