2. Charles Oliveira Was Nearsighted

Charles Oliveira, a Brazilian MMA fighter, suffered from shortsightedness or myopia, a condition in which nearby objects are clearly visible but distant objects appear hazy. People with the condition will have difficulty seeing objects larger than 25 centimetres.

Myopia will also make it difficult for the athlete to deal with moving objects. Because MMA is a sport that requires speed and accuracy, a fighter must have good vision. However, vision can be impaired for a variety of reasons.

One of the most common causes of shortsightedness is an eye injury, which MMA fighters have to deal with most when they get in the ring. Some other causes could be genetics, environmental conditions, or screentime.

In the case of Oliveira, his nearsightedness is believed to be from prolonged activities, including MMA fighting. He used to wear glasses all the time. In an interview, he stated that seeing things nearer while he was in the ring was difficult. And despite the poor vision, he claims it never interfered with his fight.

Oliveira faced numerous setbacks during his featherweight career. In training, an MMA fighter once severely injured his neck. Oliveira is believed to have twisted his neck and shoulder while attempting the takedown, resulting in the tear. Despite the severity of his injuries, Oliveria recovered quickly and returned to the octagon a few months later.

3. Charles Oliveira Eye Surgery and Healing

Oliveira has notified that he had healed from short-sightedness. However, following this, he had to go for vision correction surgery this year.

In particular, vision correction surgery is performed via the most common procedures like LASIK and PRK. Another option is a lens implant, which is not feasible for a sportsperson like Oliveira, who undergoes hard training and movements throughout their career.

Nevertheless, Oliveira successfully got through the procedure to fix his vision. As a result, the MMA fighter claims he will no longer see three opponents in the ring, and the surgery has results immaculate.

Oliveira said: “I see three faces. Three guys for me is perfect. If I take my glasses off, I only see 50 per cent but it never hindered me in a fight. I had the surgery, and my eyes are 100 per cent perfect. I can see everything now.”

He continued: “Sometimes I walk in without the glasses, sometimes I walk in with the glasses. It depends on my vibe. Sometimes I like to walk in with the glasses to look harmless and nerdier than I already am. And when I take off my glasses, it’s normal. I can see the opponent on the other side. God blesses me so much that I can see normal. But on the street, if I take it off, I’m blind.”

The former light heavyweight champion will look to claim his belt back after five losing streaks. He believes he will finish Islam Makhachev at the UFC 280 on October 22, 2022, at the Etihad Arena.
