He was a two-weight world champ, collecting the WBO middleweight championship in 1990 and the WBC super-middleweight crown in 1992 and 1996.

Nigel was nicknamed “The Dark Destroyer” because of his enormous explosiveness and combative style of fighting, with the winning ratio up to 83.3 percent.

His raucous extramarital romances put his relationship with his wife Caroline at risk. He was trying to cope with his psychological stress, which had turned fatal.

Nigel attempted suicide in the year 1999, which turned out to be unsuccessful. After that tragedy, Been became religious and bonded with his wife.

He came back from retirement from boxing on September 24, 2019, at the age of fifty-five, after ending his boxing career in 1996.
