Boris Johnson today calls on London mayor Sadiq Khan to ‘wake up’ and show ‘political leadership’ over the capital’s soaring crime rate.

Mr Johnson, who was mayor himself until 2016, uses his Daily Mail column to warn that the city is losing its reputation as one of the world’s safest metropolises.

And he takes direct aim at the Labour mayor, who is facing a challenge from Tory Susan Hal in next year’s election.

‘When London is beginning to lose its reputation as one of the safest big cities in the world that is bad news for Britain and of course bad news for ordinary people in the UK and particularly Londoners,’ Mr Johnson said.

‘So it is time for Sadiq Khan to wake up and take political leadership – it is no good just blaming the police, what they need is a proper political lead to fight crime.’

Figures released last month showed that Scotland Yard takes more than two hours to respond to ‘significant’ grade 999 calls.

Figures show it reaches such calls in two hours and 15 minutes – more than twice as long as the target and up by 52 minutes on average since 2017.

The calls include shoplifting, anti-social behaviour, burglary and hate crimes. The figures obtained by LBC radio show the average response time has shortened by 20 minutes in a year, but remains 75 minutes longer than guidance dictates it should be.
