Margot Robbie has opened up about her initial fears when signing on to take on the role of iconic doll, Barbie, for her new movie.

Fans across the globe cannot wait to finally the world of Barbie (and Ken) brought to life in the highly-anticipated comedy drama when it finally hits cinemas this week.

For the 33-year-old Australian actress, bringing the beloved – and often relived – children’s toy to life was slightly daunting due to mixed feelings about what the doll represents.

Speaking on a pre-recorded interview with Good Morning America on Tuesday, the actress explained: ‘I was both scared and excited by the idea that people were gonna come into this movie already feeling very strongly about the protagonist.’

Seeing double: The actress, 33, wore a pink and white polka dot Valentino minidress for the GMA interview and her outfit was inspired by the 2015 Pink & Fabulous doll 

She recalled: ‘I think that’s what made the project exciting… part of the reason that we wanted to make a Barbie movie to begin with was that she’s so well known and it’s such a globally recognized name.’ 

However, Robbie promised the film would be far from ‘surface level’ thanks to the script and direction by Greta Gerwig.

The actress continued: ‘I think in a lot of other hands, a Barbie movie would remain surface level. 

‘But I knew Greta was gonna have a lot to say, and I knew she was gonna Trojan Horse a lot of – big issues within a very fun world.’

Revealing her hopes for the movie, the Wolf of Wall Street star stated: ‘I hope people walk away… I hope that they feel good about themselves watching it. 

‘I feel like there’s some sorta relief in this movie and that the message ultimately is, “You’re good. You’re good as you are.”‘

One thing fan’s have been loving so far is that way Robbie has very much be ‘living in a Barbie world’ with her outfit choices during the film’s press tour.

For the interview, Robbie wowed in a pink and white polka dot Valentino minidress that was inspired by the 2015 Pink & Fabulous Barbie doll.

The front part of the halter neck dress was cut out and she completed her look with classic, white Manolo Blahnik heels. 

The Focus star and her new stylist Andrew Mukamal have been putting together outfits inspired by or exact replicas of ensembles worn by the real Barbie doll over the decades.

From a monochrome dress similar to the swimsuit worn by the first-ever Barbie to the doll’s 1985 Day to Night looks, Margot has been putting her best Barbiecore fashion foot forward.

Other look include when Robbie wore a black-and-white outfit during a trip to Australia, reminiscent of the swimsuit worn by Barbie in 1959.

Then on the red carpet at the Barbie premiere in Seoul, South Korea, the actress wore a crystal-embellished ensemble by Versace.

Her outfit featured a figure-hugging bodice and frilled skirt, and she completed her look with darker pink crystal Versace handbag and glittering ruby ring.

The look was inspired by the 1985 Day to Night edition of Barbie, and at the premiere Robbie also changed outfits into a pink blazer and classy hat. 

Based on the fashion dolls by Mattel from Ruth Handler, the upcoming film is the first-ever live action Barbie film to hit the big screen, and features a screenplay that Gerwig co-wrote with her partner, Noah Baumbach. 

Viewers will be transported to the dazzling world of ‘Barbieland’ that features Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken – alongside many versions of the iconic doll exist.

However, things take a turn when Barbie and Ken find themselves out in the ‘real world’.
