While walking is often overlooked as a form of exercise, this easy, free and low-impact form of exercise could help you shed some kilos.

The NHS reports walking can help you “build stamina, burn excess calories and make your heart healthier”.

However, you can’t just take a small walk to your local shop and expect the weight to be gone.

If calorie burning is your goal, a new tool could help you estimate how many steps you need to take in order to lose weight.

The clever tool has been built to help people figure out exactly how many calories they burn during their strolls.

The walking calorie calculator, created for Omni Calculator, collects data such as your weight, the distance you walked, and your tempo.

The tool then analyses them to estimate the calories burned as precisely as possible.

For example, if someone was to walk the recommended 4,000 steps on a flat surface, at an average tempo of 5km/h, they could burn 131.5 calories.

On the calculator’s description, it states: “You can use this calculator in two ways: either to estimate the treadmill calorie loss or the calories burned walking (for example, when you walk your dog).

“As the calculator considers the surface inclination, you can be sure that the result will be as precise as possible.”

According to Omni, the average person burns around 200 to 500 calories per hour during a walk, but it depends on many factors, so using the calculator could help you get a more precise number.

The NHS recommends being active for 150 minutes a week, and if you want to lose weight, aim to shed 1 to 2lbs, or 0.5 to 1kg, a week.
