Teh Hong Piow’s mother died when he was six years old, but his siblings increased to ten with his father’s second marriage. He attended the Anglo-Chinese School in Singapore and aspired to study law, but his family’s finances did not allow him to do so. He does, however, have three degrees from Pacific Western University, now known as California Miramar University, which is located in San Diego, California and offers courses via distance education but is unaccredited. He also has two PhDs from Clayton University, which was also not accredited, and the University of Malaya, the country’s oldest university.
Teh Hong Piow began his working life in 1950, when he was hired as a bank clerk by the Chinese Banking Corporation Ltd. He held that position for five years before being promoted to officer, which increased his net worth and encouraged him to keep up the good work. With experience as an accountant, his career prospects improved gradually, and he left the Chinese Banking Corporation to become a manager at Malayan Banking Berhad, increasing his net worth even further.
