Cornie was drafted ninety-first overall in the third round in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft by Edmonton Oilers out of the University of Michigan. The athlete would go onto the Canadian Western Hockey League for 37 games before playing for the Edmonton.

During the midway through the 2000-01 season, the athlete left the Western Hockey League’s Kootenay Ice midway to sign an incentive-laden $10 million 3-year contract with the Oilers.

When all achievable bonuses were included, the deal was well above the league maximum for the base salaries of the year 2001 draftees of $1.13 million a year.

On July 5, 2007, Cornie agreed to a one-year contract with the New York Islanders worth $3.375 million as an unrestricted free agent. Before the trade deadline on February 26, 2008, the team re-signed him to a new one-year contract worth $4 million.

On September 10, 2009, Cornie returned to the Oilers, signing a one-year contract with $1.125 million. Then in September 2010, he joined Pittsburgh Penguins with a one-year contract worth $500,000.

On September 22, 2010, he scored the very first goal inside the new Consol Energy Center, 81 seconds into the Penguins’ 5-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings. After hip surgery for the third time, Cornie retired from ice hockey on February 13, 2012.

Comrie grew up alongside his two older siblings. His sister, Cathy Cornie, and brother, Paul Comrie, played with the Oilers briefly before Mike was drafted by the Oilers.

Mike also has two younger half-brothers from his father’s second marriage who also play hockey. Eric is a goaltender who was drafted by Winnipeg Jets in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, and another brother, Ty, plays center.
