A colostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an opening in the abdomen, called a stoma, to divert stool from the colon to the outside of the body. This is done when there is a blockage or other problem in the lower digestive tract that prevents stool from passing normally. The stool is then collected in a colostomy bag, which is worn on the abdomen.
