Rupiah Bwezani Banda, a Zambian politician who served as the country’s fourth president from 2008 to 2011, was born on February 19, 1937. Banda held major diplomatic appointments and was prominent in politics as a member of the United National Independence Party during Kenneth Kaunda’s presidency (UNIP).

According to official findings, he barely won the presidential by-election in October 2008 as the candidate of the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD).

Despite an almost forty-year age difference, Rupiah and his second wife, Thandiwe Banda, married in the 2000s. At the time of their wedding, he was in his 70s, and she was in her 30s.

According to an interview she conducted with BBC Africa, Thandiwe and Rupiah Banda are the parents of twins Temwani and Duniya, whose pregnancy came as a surprise to both of them.
