This year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee was won by Vikram Raju of Aurora. It all came down to a spell-off, the first of its kind in the Scripps National Spelling Bee’s history. Each player has 90 seconds to correctly spell as many words as possible.
Harini Logan, 14, of San Antonio, Texas, correctly spelled 21 terms, making her the Scripps National Spelling Bee champion for 2022.
After Boulder’s Zoe Keith, 14, and Tejas Raman, 12, were knocked out of the competition Wednesday during the semifinal rounds, which comprised over 50 spellers out of the original 234 entrants from throughout the country, Vikram was the only speller representing Colorado in the finals.

Raju outspelled more than 230 students from across the country and took home $25,000. He fought back tears as he promised to return for another chance next year.

Raju’s mother, Sandhya Ayyar, remarked that her son’s talent astounds people and that he was a natural speller from a young age. Raju placed first in his first national spelling bee competition when he was in third grade.
