Steve Bronski, a founding member of the seminal British synthpop band Bronski Beat, has died, according to the source. The BBC gave him the age of 61. There was no mention of a death cause.
A bandmate, Jimmy Somerville, described him as a “brilliant and incredibly musical individual.”
Bronski, real name Steven Forrest, co-founded the band in 1983 with Larry Steinbachek and Somerville.
The band’s three openly gay members employed strong political themes in their songs to combat what they perceived as the inoffensive tone of the era’s LGBT performers. As a result, Spin magazine in the United States branded them “perhaps the first authentic gay group in music history.”
Sad to hear Steve Bronski has died. He was a talented and a very melodic man. Working with him on songs and the one song that changed our lives and touched so many other lives, was a fun and exciting time. Thanks for the melody Steve. Jimmy x pic.twitter.com/VfxbtZu1Nx
