After Kurt Angle was fired, Teddy Long was named SmackDown’s first African-American general manager in July 2004. When Long fined Angle $1,000 for not having his wrestling equipment on his first night as general manager, he lost his cool quickly.

Long used The Boogeyman to defeat Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff at Survivor Series as part of the SmackDown! vs. Raw storyline. However, Booker T and his defense of the US Championship complicated Long’s situation.

Booker T frequently avoided title defenses by pretending to be injured and having other wrestlers fight on his behalf. Long had had enough of these shenanigans, and Booker was given an ultimatum at No Way, Out: face Chris Benoit or lose the championship.

On the April 7, 2009 episode of ECW, he announced that he will return to SmackDown as general manager, with Tiffany taking his place. He did so in order to become the organization’s first general manager to serve a second term.

Teddy Long held several titles in the pro wrestling world, but his work as a color commentator for WCW in the late 1990s may have made the best use of his ability to talk.

While still with WCW, the “Godfather of Wrestling” decided to take on commentary duties. Many people were surprised by the WWE’s failure to fit him behind the commentator’s desk after deciding his days of leading Smackdown were over.
