His maternal grandparents were both born stateless, his grandmother in Germany, the descendant of Russian immigrants, and his grandfather in Harbin. During the Cultural Revolution, his mother and parents were expelled from China and sought refuge in Australia.

Mr. Hollo’s father was born in Hungary shortly after World War II ended. His grandparents left Budapest for Australia in 1956, passing through an Austrian refugee camp on their way.
The Chinese government did not recognize his mother’s birth certificate, which was a mash-up of Hebrew, Russian, and Mandarin. His family was placed under the United Nations’ care in Hong Kong for a year before settling in Australia.
