A man has died after a car smashed through a barrier in Swansea marina – which is a fully pedestrianised area – and ploughed into the water.

South Wales Police rushed to the scene outside the National Waterfront Museum shortly after 10am today.

Detective Inspector Chris Evans said the death is currently being treated as ‘unexplained’.

One woman at the scene said she heard ‘one hell of a bang’ as the incident unfolded, but added that she didn’t see anything when speaking to WalesOnline.

Many locals took to social media to express their condolences for the unnamed man’s family, following the ‘sad news’.

‘The death is being treated as unexplained at this time and enquiries are continuing to ascertain the full circumstances behind the incident.

‘The incident is ongoing whilst the car is being recovered.’

Earlier, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said a ‘casualty’ had been rescued from the ‘submerged vehicle’ which crashed.

It added a ‘private motor vehicle had driven through a barrier and had entered the water with one person inside the vehicle’.
