According to a Tuesday indictment, New York Democratic Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin has been arrested on fraud charges.

Benjamin is accused of bribery and other offenses in connection with his alleged participation in a scheme to solicit campaign contributions in exchange for a state grant.

Benjamin has turned himself in to authorities to face campaign finance fraud charges in connection with a previous campaign, according to CNBC.

Benjamin is scheduled to appear in federal court in Manhattan later Tuesday. Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office, as well as a spokesman for Benjamin, could not be reached for comment on the arrest immediately.

Following his arrest prosecutors in Manhattan and the FBI are investigating whether Benjamin willfully participated in a campaign money crime conspiracy.

According to CNBC, a spokesperson for the U.S. attorney’s office and a spokeswoman for the FBI previously refused WNBC requests for comment on the Benjamin probe.

A representative for Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins did not respond to calls for comment, either.
