Irma Garcia was identified as a victim of the atrocity in the early hours of Wednesday by distraught friends and family members after a high school student opened fire inside an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.
Irma had taught for 23 years and had been named teacher of the year by the Uvalde Independent School District in 2019.
A nephew named John shared the news of Garcia’s death on Facebook, saying that she did not make it because she sacrificed herself to protect the children in her classroom.
John asked people to remember his family, including Garcia’s entire family, and Garcia died a HERO in their prayers. Garcia was adored by many people and will be sorely missed.

Uziyah was in fourth grade and would have turned ten this summer. Uziyah’s aunt, Nikki Cross, confirmed his death and shared a photo of him.

Irma and Joe’s eldest son, Cristian, finished Marine boot camp, and another son, Jose, attended Texas State University. Lyliana, their eldest daughter, will be a sophomore in high school this year, and Alesandra, my youngest, will be a seventh-grader.
