James met his future wife Leona Edwards in Alabama. Back, then he was visiting his sister Addie in Pine Level.

After love at first sight, Park’s parents married on April 12, 1912, at Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in Pine Level.

Rosa’s mother, Leona was born the youngest child of Sylvester and Rose Edwards. She had attended the Payne University in Selma.

James and Leona McCauley went to Tuskegee, Alabama, shortly after their marriage. Together they found jobs in Macon County building houses.

By profession, Rosa Park’s mother was a teacher, however, after getting pregnant she had to leave her job.

Leona wished James to teach at the Tuskegee Institute. But, preferring the contract job was more profitable for running the family.
