Recently there has been a piece of information flying around the internet including social media that the Fifth-Generation Network (5G) signals caused the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that broke in Wuhan China in mid-December 2019.
What this information is simply implying is that COVID-19 is likely a negative effect of the development of the 5G network.
So far, the information has spread far and wide initiating conversations online. A few people including celebrities were seen sharing the information on their social media (such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Whatsapp, etc.) official accounts.
Aside from British boxer Amir Kahn, Woody Harrelson (Hollywood actor) was another celebrity seen sharing this information on social media.
Via his Instagram page post, Mr. Harrelson said:
“A lot of my friends have been talking about the negative effects of 5G My friend Camilla seems this to me today and though I haven’t fully vetted it I find it very interesting [SIC]”.
Other popular figures (from Nigeria) on the list according to Legit.com are pastor Chris Oyakhilome and Senator Dino Melaye (former Kogi state lawmaker).
Pastor Chris Oyakilome, founder of Believers Love World popularly known as Christ Embassy claimed that:
- ” COVID-19 pandemic was created to popularise the 5G network across the world”.
- 5G network and the pandemic are parts of the Antichrist’s plan for a new world order.
In addition to pastor Chris’s claim, Senator Melaye also claimed that “5G is evil” and is “a danger to the world”. Legit wrote.
The question amid these claims and allegations remains ” Does 5G network cause COVID-19?”
Does 5G network cause COVID-19?
5G network does not have a direct link to cause COVID-19 as there is currently no conclusive research evidence that shows 5G network signal causes COVID-19 or that COVID-19 is a negative effect of 5G signals.
To further prove that those claims are baseless and fake, here are what scientists and medical experts said against “5G network causes SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19”
Prof Malcolm Sperrin, Director of the Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust added:
“There is no sensible link between the use of 5G frequencies and COVID-19 or any other biological virus or bacteria. This sort of conjecture only contributes to the risk to individuals who are prepared to believe such non-science as opposed to the considerable efforts being made by medical science to enable the population to protect themselves in an informed manner.
“The energy of the 5G wave is insufficient to break bonds and hence it is called ‘non-ionizing’ as opposed to ‘ionizing’ radiation such as X-rays. Furthermore, the intensity transmitted from the masts is extremely low. The risk from jeopardizing a means of communication at the current time is of concern and is entirely unwarranted.
“The supposed correlation between 5G and its development in China reveals a complete lack of understanding of the difference between cause and coincidence. In the simplest terms there might have been a train leaving Wuhan station during 5G development, but the train departure was not caused by 5G.” Science Media Centre wrote

Prof Adam Finn, Professor of Paediatrics, University of Bristol, said:
“The present epidemic is caused by a virus that is passed from one infected person to another. We know this is true. We even have the virus growing in our lab, obtained from a person with the illness. Viruses and electromagnetic waves that make mobile phones and internet connections work are different things. As different as chalk and cheese. The internet connections these networks give us are one of the most important tools we are using to coordinate our response to the epidemic and efforts to do research to overcome it. Damaging phone masts is like knocking holes in your lifeboats while your ship sinks.”
Prof Brendan Wren, Professor of Microbial Pathogenesis, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said:
“There is no scientifically credible evidence to link the introduction of 5G masts with the COVID-19 outbreak. This would be both a physical and biological impossibility.”
Professor Brian Cox, one of the UK’s top scientists, wrote on Twitter:
“If you thought 5G network causes COVID-19 because you read a thing by an idiot, and still believe it after having it explained to you that this is unadulterated drivel, you are a complete idiot.” Daily Express wrote.
Dr. Simon Clarke, Associate Professor in Cellular Microbiology, the University of Reading, said:
“The idea that 5G network signal causes COVID-19 is complete rubbish. This is a disease which numerous doctors and scientists around the world have said is caused by a virus, something completely different from a mobile phone signal.
“Viruses are tiny particles made up of genetic material, wrapped in a layer of proteins and fats. They have no metabolism and can’t reproduce without causing an infection. In the case of this coronavirus, it infects cells in the human lungs in order to replicate, damaging them and also causing a harmful immune reaction in the process. 5G radio signals are electromagnetic waves, very similar to those already used by mobile phones. Electromagnetic waves are one thing, viruses are another, and you can’t get a virus off a phone mast.”
Based on experts’ reactions above and the lack of evidence, it is important to ignore all information and claims on the internet related to this subject and avoid sharing them on any media platforms.
