Former city councilman Chris Gadsen stated in an opinion piece for Hudson County View that Fulop and his city council candidates would wait until September 1 to put pressure on Degise to leave.

Amy Degise, a Jersey City councilwoman, has had her hit-and-run case transferred to Essex County.

Degise was seen on security footage on July 19 striking a cyclist who had run a red light before driving away. Six hours later, when she reported the collision to Jersey City Police, she was charged with failure to report an accident and action in case of an accident, a legal term for a hit-and-run.

Degise is one of Jersey City’s three at-large city council members. Until recently, she presided over the Hudson County Democratic Committee, widely regarded as one of New Jersey’s most powerful political organizations.

When her father, Tom Degise, retires, she is expected to take over his political organization. Hudson County’s executive is Tom Degise.

Activists, including two city council members, James Solomon and Frank Gilmore, are now calling for Degise to resign. Mayor Steven Fulop, who is expected to run for governor in 2025, chastised Degise but did not call for her resignation.

In 2018, a rare open election was held to elect Degise to the position of county committee head, revealing divisions among Hudson County Democrats. However, Solomon and others claim that the party’s key factions have just reached a power-sharing agreement, ushering in a new era of peace.

Amy Degise Resigns From Her Job Right After

On Wednesday night, a troubled Jersey City councilor received new resignation petitions. Amy Degise’s alleged hit-and-run was caught on camera.

During the Wednesday council meeting, a number of Jersey City residents urged Degise to resign her at-large council seat.

Amy Degise, if you care about the people of this city, their health, and their safety, you must resign immediately. Resign right away. Someone mentioned it. A different person stated, “We are pleading with you to leave.”

Degise, for her part, confronted her critics but remained silent as the scrutiny mounted, as CBS2’s Nick Caloway recounts.

Will She Be Arrested For Her Wrong?

Her position as an at-large city councilwoman, as well as her relationship with Hudson County Executive Tom Degise, may have contributed to the change in location.

Degise hasn’t made any major public appearances since the incident, but she did attend the City Council’s caucus meeting this morning. The council will meet as usual this Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The case of Degise, who struck a bicycle without stopping in Jersey City in July, will be heard in the Special Remand Court of the Essex County Superior Court, according to the Jersey Journal on Friday. She was originally scheduled to appear in Jersey City Municipal Court today.

Degise was accused of hitting cyclist Andrew Black on July 19, but he has refused to resign. He also waited six hours before contacting the authorities. Black was slightly injured during the event.
