Vachss’ eye muscles were damaged after an older boy swung a chain in his right eye. Because of the injury, he had to wear an eye patch. Furthermore, he was only 7 years old at the time of the incident.

Vachss, on the other hand, was previously employed in Biafra. Following the Nigerian government’s closure of seaports and restrictions on Red Cross airlifts, the author worked to find a land route to transport medical supplies and food. Unfortunately, none of the attempts succeeded, and the people were forced to starve.
Vachss was not only injured when he returned, but he was also malnourished. In fact, he was also diagnosed with Malaria. He studied community organizing after he recovered from it.
