A cunning forward from New York named Bernard Toone, who was a member of Marquette’s NCAA men’s basketball championship team in 1977, died at the age of 65.

Similarly, Marquette Basketball posted the news of his demise on their official Twitter account.

The statement reads, “We are devastated to announce that National Champion and All-American Bernard Toone lost his fight with cancer during the holiday weekend. We are thinking of his friends and family.”



Toone, who stands 6 feet 9 inches tall, was a highly sought-after Yonkers, New York, recruit who joined MU in 1975 to play for famed coach Al McGuire.

On those all-star Warriors teams, Toone struggled to get playing time, which occasionally resulted in a tense relationship with McGuire. He averaged 5.5 points on average in his freshman season and 4.4 points in his sophomore season.

According to reports, veteran American basketball player Bernard Toone died from cancer. His death’s cause was disclosed by Marquette Basketball in a statement that was publicly released.

Additionally, the specifics of his funeral and memorial services are yet unclear; they will become known as soon as his family discloses the information.

During the 1976–1977 campaign, the player and coach got into a number of altercations, including one during the NCAA Tournament. However, it never stopped MU from winning the championship during McGuire’s final season as coach.

“When we won the title, it all paid off,” Toone remarked to Milwaukee Journal reporter Mary Schmitt in 1987. “With all the conflict Al and I had, it meant a lot to me.”

In Toone’s final two years at MU, head coach Hank Raymonds saw an improvement in his performance. In the 1978–1979 season, Toone assumed a prominent position as a senior, averaging 18.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest.

The Milwaukee Journal reported in 1987, “The issue with Bernard, his trend was to have fun all the time.” Almost, there was an overbalance. “But you had to like the guy. Something about his smile just drew you in.”
