Is Claudette Colvin Still Alive 2022, Where Is She Now?

When civil rights activist Claudette Colvin was arrested in 1955, she was only 15 years old. According to the BBC, she was pregnant at the time.

Is Claudette Colvin Still Alive 2022, Where Is She Now?

Claudette Colvin is a well-known civil rights activist and former nurse aide. She did not receive the same popularity and recognition as Rosa Pards because they both did the same work in 1955. Why?

According to Colvin’s Wikipedia page, there are several reasons for this, including the fact that she was a teenager, dark-skinned, and had unruly hair, and was pregnant.

In 1955, Rosa was arrested for not giving up her seat to a white woman on a segregated bus since the rule was based on color. After nine months in December, Rosa Parks did the same thing and became the sensational news in the 1950s.

Rosa Parks was honored by the US Congress as “the first lady of civil rights,” which is false. Prior to Rosa, Colvin denied giving up his seat in March 1955 to a white woman. She is also known as the “Mother of the Freedom Movement.”

Is Claudette Colvin Still Alive 2022, Where Is She Now?

Yes, Claudette Colvin is still alive and living a healthy life. There is no news of her getting the severe illness in the media. She seems to be ok.

She dwells in the Bronx after getting retired from her job. She is probably enjoying her life with her family peacefully.

Was Civil Rights Pioneer Claudette Colvin Pregnant At 15?

Claudette Colvin became pregnant at 15 in the same year when she was arrested in 1955 for speaking against giving up the seat in a segregated bus.

As per BBC, Claudette spoke out and recalled the days of the 1950s civil rights mass movement to abolish racial segregation and discrimination. She said to BBC there was racial segregation everywhere schools, buses, churches, restaurants.

You won’t believe what Colvin said when she wanted to buy black patent shoes for Easter one year but could only find them in white stores. Her mother drew the outline of her feet on a brown paper bag to get the closest size because they weren’t allowed to try them on in the store.”

Fortunately, we were not born at that time, and we must admit that the country has changed dramatically.

When Did Claudette Colvin Have Her Son, Raymond?

Claudette Colvin gave birth to a son named Raymond in the same year 1955. She was 15. The baby was fair-skinned just like his dad and people accused her of having a white baby.

Nonetheless, Raymond died at the age of 37, reported Core Online. He was drug-addicted and alcoholic and passed away of a cardiac attack in Colvin’s apartment.

The 82-year-old Claudette dreamed of becoming a lawyer, but she pursued her career as a nurse. She worked for nearly 35 years in the nursing home as a nurse’s assistant and got retired in 2004.
