Jake McKinley, a “well decorated” young basketball player for the Manawatu Jets, was killed in a car accident.
Jake McKinlay was killed early Monday morning, according to the team’s social media posts.
“It is with heavy hearts and immense regret that we mourn the loss of a member of the Jets family, Jake McKinlay, who was tragically killed in a car accident this morning,” the message said.
There are no words to express our sorrow and grief for this exceptional young man who still had his entire life ahead of him. At this difficult time, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Jake’s family and friends.
A car and a truck collided on State Highway 1 north of Taki shortly before 6 a.m. on Monday, killing one person.
McKinlay is thought to be the victim, but authorities have not confirmed this.
Darryl June, the Manawatu Jets’ general manager, said the team would issue an official statement on McKinlay’s death on Tuesday.
