Who Are Jean Segure Parents? Jean Segura parents Carlos Segura and Anny Maribel are athletes. Jean belongs to a family from the Dominican Republic.
The former Seattle Mariners shortstop comes from humble beginnings in the Dominican town of San Juan de la Maguana. Jean’s mom and dad are former baseball players.
Despite his early hardships and the devastating events of 2014, Jean became one of the hottest players in the major leagues.
His parents are not shy about expressing the love and pride they have for their son. Their son has single-handedly brought the family out of poverty after all.
Today, Jean is married to Kellen Mendez, and has three young sons. But he hasn’t forgotten about the people who raised him and the hardships they went through to help raise him and two other siblings.
Jean Segure Parents Carlos Segura And Anny Maribel
Jean Segura parents Carlos Enrique Segura de la Rosa and Anny Maribel Encarnación are Dominican baseball players.
“El Mambo” was born on March 17, 1990, which makes him 32 years old as of 2022. He recalls growing up with his sister Jessica Mariel and brother Jeffry Michael Segura Encarnación in a home with dirt floors, wood walls, and tin roof.
Jean’s hometown of San Juan de la Maguana is a 3-hour car ride away from the Dominican Republic’s capital city of Santo Domingo. His dad Carlos Enrique recalls Jean having an interest in baseball since the age of three.
Being Dominicans, baseball was in the blood of the Segura family. Carlos always took Jean to his games which sparked a lifelong interest in the young boy. “From such a stick, such a splinter,” Carlos said recalling his boy’s childhood but in Spanish.
Jean’s mother Anny played softball, the baseball equivalent which is more popular among women’s teams in the Dominican Republic. Jean briefly lost interest in baseball when he was 12, getting more into basketball, the most glamorized sport among American sports.
But, after a friend of Carlos saw Jean play baseball, he recognized his talent and enrolled him in a program, for which Jean had to leave school at the age of 15.
“At the time, probably it was not the best situation for me or best choice I made in my life, because when you are young and you quit school to play sports it’s not right, it’s not what the kids are supposed to do,” Jean said in an interview with Seattle Sports in 2018.
In 2007, at 16, Jean was signed by his first team, the Los Angeles Angels. He gave the signing bonus of $70,000, a big sum of money for the young boy of just 16, to repair his parents’ house.
“I gave all my signing bonus to my family. We kind of spent all of the money on the house but the money always goes away, comes back and forth, but the good thing was we have a house, we live comfortable, and when I bring a friend to the house we can represent.”Jean said.
Today, despite his huge success, Carlos and Anny insist on living humbly, a trait that has been passed down to their youngest son.
Jean Segura Family
Jean Segura was born into a Dominican family and grew with two siblings.
Jean married his Venezuelan bride Kellen Mendez on May 8, 2013. They have been married for nine years and have welcomed three young sons, namely Ronaldo, Jean Jr., and Giancarlo.
After the heartbreaking event of 2014, when Jean’s 9-month-old child Janniel, passed away due to illness, Jean and Kellen finally seem to have moved on. 2014 was a tragic year for Jean when he almost quit baseball.
Today, Jean has had massive successes, both on and off the field. As of recent news, Segura has signed a 2-year, $17 million contract with the Miami Marlins, after just 2 months of being a free agent. The second baseman still has much potential, at least in the eyes of Marlins manager Skip Schumaker.
Jean has come a long way from being a 16-year-old kid who only played baseball to put food on his family’s table. In addition to his baseball prowess, Jean is very hardworking and introspective, making him one of the MLB fan favorites.
When he first came to the US, Jean didn’t speak a lick of English but strived to learn it, whatever it took. His first experience learning the language was by ordering food over the telephone.
Off the field, Segura has a beautiful support system. His wife Kellen is often seen attending his games along with their sons. Jean’s smile shines through to his fans on his vacation posts with his loved ones.
On January 2022, Jean took his wife and kids to his home country the Dominican Republic. Traveling in a chartered helicopter to your hometown, where you had to worry about your next meal, must have been a surreal but satisfying experience.
From very humble beginnings to one of the most successful players in the MLB, with a strong beautiful partner and three lovely sons who will most likely grow up to be professional athletes, the story of Jean Segura is truly the American dream.
