Saulos Chilima, Malawi’s former vice president, has been arrested on corruption allegations. The country’s anti-corruption agency says that he accepted money in exchange for awarding government contracts.
Chilima is accused of receiving $280,000 “and other items” from a British businessman named Zuneth Sattar.
Dr. Chilima is now facing six charges relating to corruption. He has appeared in court but is yet to comment on the charges.
His supporters appeared to clash with the Police as he entered the court in the Malawi capital of Lilongwe.
Sattar, who was also arrested in the UK in October 2021, denies all wrongdoings and is now out on bail.
He is accused of using connections with senior Malawi government officials to illegally obtain contracts to supply products. The agreements reportedly relate to food rations, water cannons, and armored personnel carriers.
Dr. Chilima had previously campaigned on an anti-corruption program, promising to end decades of issues in the government and poverty in one of the world’s poorest nations.
However, he was stripped of his delegated powers on June 22, 2022, when the Anti-Corruption Bureau first accused him. The authority has named him and 83 other Malawian officials in the large-scale corruption investigation.

Saulos Klaus Chilima was born at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Ntcheu, Malawi. His parents are Elizabeth Frances Chilima of Mbilintengerenji Village, Ntcheu, and Henderson Brown Chilima of Ching’anga Village, Lilongwe.
Saulos spent much of his early life in Blantyre, where his parents worked. Like most children, he also spent his long school summer holidays at his maternal and paternal grandparents’ villages of Ntcheu and Lilongwe, respectively.
