In 1892, during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Stefan Banach was born in Krakow, Poland. His father had him raised by relatives in the city; he never met his mother.

He lectured at nearby schools because he was unable to serve in the military during World War I because of his vision issues.

In his free time and after school, Banach used to solve math problems with his best friend Witold Wikosz, who later became a well-known mathematician. Banach was always good at math.

After publishing mathematical articles he and a friend had worked on in their spare time, he was hired at Lvov Technical University. He was a professor of mathematics who was primarily self-taught.
