Yaroshenko, a Russian pilot, faced a lengthy prison sentence for drug smuggling. He was arrested in Liberia in 2010 and was serving a twenty-year prison sentence at the time.
Reed’s parents had protested outside the White House last month, and the prison swap was successful. They were eventually able to secure a meeting with the President. After President Biden commuted Mr. Yaroshenko’s sentence, the swap was carried out through Turkey.
