Charlie: Who’s laughing now?
As an overweight schoolboy, Charlie was often the butt of jokes. But after losing an amazing 6st 4lb, he’s happy, confident, and looking forward to the future
I lost 5st before I started uni, and was able to start my law degree with so much more self-belief.
Realising the truth
When I was embarrassed at a nightclub by a guy I’d gone to school with, I knew I needed to do something about my weight. I’d accidentally trodden on his toe, and in response he showed off to his mates, making fun of me and shouting abuse. I crept off to the bathroom, mortified.
My weight was affecting my life
My weight affected my confidence and I knew I was missing out on things. I couldn’t shop for nice clothes, didn’t want to get into relationships, and hated photos of myself. Soon after the incident at the nightclub, I joined Weight Watchers.
Taking control
After discovering I weighed more than 18st, I felt determined to get to goal. I started planning my meals a bit better, and still got to enjoy foods I loved. I could have an Indian takeaway if I wanted, but instead of ordering a creamy korma, I’d choose a light shashlik and track the SmartPoints.
Meeting my boyfriend
I continued to lose as I studied, and eventually met my boyfriend, Matthew, who understood everything I’d been through as he’d also had weight problems.
I wish I’d done it sooner!
I got to goal in 2012 and have been maintaining for 5 years. If I could go back in time, I’d give my younger self a Weight Watchers leaflet and tell him to start straight away.
