According to Capt. Nicholas Lennie of the Story County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred just before 7 p.m. outside Cornerstone Church in Ames, and deputies discovered two women and a man dead.

During a news conference held at the Story County Sheriff’s Office in Nevada on Friday morning, authorities provided additional details on the deadly Ames church shooting.
At about 6:50 p.m. Thursday, Jonathan Lee Whitlatch, 33, of Boone reportedly shot and killed Eden Mariah Montang, 22, and Vivian Renee Flores, 21, in the church parking lot. Flores was collateral as the shooter’s main target was said to be Eden Mariah Montang.
Whitlatch had recently broken up with Montang, and Whitlatch had been pestering his ex-girlfriend. He’d only been charged with domestic violence and impersonating a public authority on Tuesday. According to authorities, both of these accusations, as well as a restraining order, were tied to Montang.

Montang and Vivian Renee Flores were both students at Iowa State University and were attending a bible study at Cornerstone Church in Ames.
Cornerstone Church issued a statement confirming that the women killed were “young members of our community,” but declined to provide any other information on the victims or shooter, citing the current police investigation.
Flores’s husband and family have not come forward and spoke. However, they must be devasted to lose their beloved ones. It is not sure if Flores has a spouse. May they remain strong, and the deceased may rest in peace.
